Gale Hart
I am driven to create art that exposes the contradictions and inequities of modern life. My work explores potent and controversial themes—animal welfare, graffiti life, gun culture, social media, and the inherent power dynamics in professional sports—with curiosity and humor that sometimes verge on the absurd. As a self-taught artist, I work across various mediums, including hand-drawn books, monumental paintings on canvas, and highly polished sculptures in stainless steel, aluminum, cast concrete and bronze. I am meticulous about producing masterfully crafted finished work.
My ease in creating art from metal, wood, and paint traces back to my childhood. My grandfather, a car mechanic, let me play with bolts, nuts, scrap metal, and wood in his garage. As a full-time professional artist for the past forty years, I have experimented with highly technical processes and fabrication techniques, solved engineering and structural challenges, and kept public commissions within budget while maintaining narrative composition and a visual vocabulary that engages the viewer.
My work can be found in private collections and museum permanent collections, including the Crocker Art Museum in California, and public spaces like the Virgin Voyages Cruise line in Italy, the Golden One Sports and Entertainment Center in California, and the Elk Grove Animal Shelter in California. My solo and group shows include the Museum of Modern Art in El Paso, Texas; Context Miami; Context New York; Spoke Art Fair; and Art Aspen.
